A Lexington priest is donating meals to federal workers at Blue Grass Airport who continue working without pay.
Father Jim Sichko, Papal Missionary of Mercy for Pope Leo, delivered breakfast and lunch Thursday to several airport workers affected by the ongoing shutdown.
The priest said he felt compelled to help during what he sees as an opportunity to give back, especially as countless federal workers across the country go without paychecks.
Airport staff in Kentucky are among those affected.
“That’s something very powerful, to know that your job is appreciated and that people really do respect them to come to work, even without being paid,” Sichko said.
As a frequent flyer, Sichko said helping the workers felt natural since they have helped him many times.
“They keep me safe, they keep us safe, and it’s a stress-filled job and they’re not getting paid for it right now,” he said.
