A suspect is in custody following a 4-hour-long SWAT standoff that started with police finding a headless body in Jeffersonville.

The incident originated with a call for a welfare check in the 1700 block of Summerlin Place at around 9:56 a.m. on Friday morning. Upon arriving at the home, officers discovered a crime scene that they described as a “very apparent homicide.”

Evidence at the scene led officers to a home in the 3000 block of Callaway Drive at around 10:16 a.m., where they located a person of interest, later identified as 33-year-old Bryce Winnecke, outside the home and armed. Winnecke then barricaded himself in the home.

After Winnecke refused to exit the home, tactical and SWAT teams were called to aid in the de-escalation process.

After approximately four hours, Winnecke exited the home and was taken into custody without incident.

Clark County Prosecutor Jeremy Mull confirmed that police had found both a body without a head at one scene and a severed head at the other.

Jeffersonville Police said that this is an isolated incident that does not pose any danger to the community.
